1. Wendell Braxton welcomed the attendees to the meeting.
2. 3. Hazel Jordan facilitated the meeting and had attendees introduce themselves.
4. The TV commercial which is being aired during Judge Joe Brown and other shows was shown. The plan is to make another commercial in the future with other members that are interested in participating. There was discussion about information on the local stations.
5. A new FACES website funded by the VACAP grant is being worked on by Bill Townsley. This will be a great resource throughout the year - free tax assistance during the filing season, upcoming events, member information, financial education opportunities, etc. Please check it out and send thoughts or suggestions to Kevin at kfleming@uwvp.org or myself at wanda.s.miller2@irs.gov. 6. FACES will have a booth at the Hampton Child Fair in August. Suntrust is providing a spending wheel for the booth. There will be a signup for the financial education class Credit Fundmentals and the details will be finalized before the event and will be in the FACES brochure. At last year's event, there were over 7,500 attendees.
The following things are needed. Please let Kevin at kfleming@uwvp.org know as soon as possible how you can volunteer. a. man the booth, b. prizes for the wheel, c. members' brochures, d. give a way to encourage people to stop
7. Ted Crossland spoke about the Hunt for Hampton in November. More information to come at the next meeting.
8. Financial education classes was discussed. One class will be in the FACES brochure and signup will be at the Child Fair. Other suggestions were savings, spending plan, rapid refund, and home ownership. Please provide any free financial education classes to Kevin at kfleming@uwvp.org to provide to First Call.
9. VITA grant was discussed and FACES will apply as a coalition. The site coordinator information was provided to Wendell Braxton who will be working on the grant. More information to come.
10. The next steering committee meeting will be Sept 10 at 1 pm at United Way. The next FACES meeting will be Sept 12 at 12 pm at Office of Human Affairs.
